Tigers drop Big 10 tilt to Grafton

ELKINS — Ryan Maier fired in 30 points and Grafton used a dominating third quarter in claiming a 65-53 win over Class AAA, No. 7 Elkins Wednesday night in Big 10 Conference action at Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium.

The Bearcats, ranked 11th in this week’s AP poll, have won five straight games to improve to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in Big 10 games.

Cory Harper led the Tigers (6-3, 2-2 Big 10) with 23 points, followed by Jayden Shreve, who drilled five 3-pointers, with 17 points.

Malachi Watson just missed double figures with nine.

Kaden Delaney added 13 points for Grafton, which outscored Elkins, 21-7, in the decisive third frame after the Tigers carried a 30-29 lead into halftime. The visitors led 17-16 after the opening quarter of play.

The Bearcats return to action Friday night at Preston, while Elkins visits East Fairmont on the same evening.
