PB’s Simon repeats as Big 10 Player of the Year

Elkins’ Stone, Haddix, B-U’s McDaniels and PB’s Criss named to first team

PHILIPPI — For the second straight year, Philip Barbour’s Sara Simon has been tabbed the Big 10 Conference Player of the Year.

Simon helped guide Philip Barbour to its first appearance in the regional finals this past spring with her pitching and hitting.

On the mound, the West Liberty signee went 7-3 with a 1.51 ERA and 227 strikeouts, while at the plate she hit .500 with four homers, four triples, five doubles and 19 RBIs.

League and tournament champion Lincoln claimed the other two individual awards as Delaney Haler was named the Pitcher of the Year and Yancey Weaver the Coach of the Year.

Elkins, meanwhile, placed senior outfielder and West Virginia Wesleyan signee Kaitlynn Stone and sophomore third baseman Emerson Haddix on the first team. Buckhannon-Upshur’s Shelby McDaniels, who recently committed to play softball at Glenville State, was named the shortstop of the first unit.

The remainder of the first team includes Philip Barbour’s Lilley Criss, Grafton’s Frederique Maloley (utility), Lewis County’s Abby Hartley and Lincoln’s Alexis Williams as the utility players, Robert C. Byrd’s Fran Alvaro (pitcher), Liberty’s Emma Kyle (catcher), Fairmont Senior’s Liz Murphy (first base), RCB’s Ava Junkins (second base), Liberty’s Kadence Crock (outfield) and RCB’s Isabella Prieto (outfield).

B-U pitcher Jansen Kimble was selected to the second team, along with Lincoln’s Emily Robey (outfield), Cadence Lambert (utility) and Emalee Brown (outfield), RCB’s Gina Alvaro (catcher) and Alyssa Dunn (shortstop), East Fairmont’s Izzy Vincent (second base), Faith Gaines (outfield) and Blair Nuzum (utility), Bridgeport’s Rachel Mason (third base), Liberty’s Haley Younkins (utility) and Grafton’s Gracen Purkey (utility).
