B-UHS Athletic HOF Banquet set for Saturday

Five individuals and one team set to be inducted

TENNERTON — Five individuals and one team will be inducted the Buckhannon-Upshur High School Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday evening.

The class of 2024 was announced by Jim Marsh, chairman of the B-UHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

The individuals include Fred Gaudet, Kayla Linger, Doug Straight, Brooklyn Waddell and John Shomo.

The 1999 B-UHS baseball squad will also enter the HOF.

Here is a profile of each of the inductees:

Fred Gaudet

A 1968 graduate of B-UHS, Gaudet was an outstanding football and basketball player of the Bucs.

He was a member of the 1966 Class AAA state championship football team.

In 1967, he was senior co-captain, all-Big 10 Conference honorable mention and accepted a football scholarship to Marshall College (now University).

In basketball, he was named all-Big Conference honorable mention, averaging 17 points per game.

As a dedicated public servant, Gaudet served as City of Buckhannon Chief of Police, magistrate, Upshur County sheriff and on Upshur County Commission.

Kayla Linger

Linger was a 2011 B-UHS graduate, excelling as a softball player.

In 2008, she was named Rookie of the Year and in 2009, Linger was the B-UHS softball MVP and first-team selection on the all-North Central Athletic squad.

As a starting pitcher in 2010, Linger earned NCAC Pitcher of the Year honors and was selected to the Class AAA all-state first team.

Her career stats include 517 strikeouts, a 1.28 ERA and WHIP average of 0.86.

Linger received the Ray Wollaber Memorial Award in 2011.

Doug Straight

Straight graduated from B-UHS in 1996, competing on the varsity baseball team for four years.

He was a two-time all-NCAC first-team selection. During his senior year, Straight posted a stellar .519 batting average and was named NCAC Player of the Year and chosen to the Class AAA all-state first team.

He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1996 but chose to continue his baseball career at Kent State University.

While at KSU, he posted 20 career wins and received the Steve Stone Outstanding Baseball Player of the Year Award.

Brooklyn Waddell

Waddell graduated from B-UHS in 2013. She was a standout in soccer and softball.

In softball, she earned all-state second-team honors in 2012 and 2013.

Waddell was named to the all-state honorable-mention list in 2011.

In soccer, she was selected to the all-state second team in 2012 and first team all-Big 10 in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

At West Virginia Wesleyan College, Waddell was twice an NCAA Division II All-American in softball and MEC Softball Player of the Year in 2015.

She was also named first team all-MEC and all-Regional in 2015 and 2016.

As a senior in 2017, Waddell was the MEC Tournament MVP in softball, while being the Culpepper Athletic of the Year at Wesleyan.

John Shomo

Shomo was a 1954 graduate of B-UHS, where he participated in football, basketball, baseball and track.

In baseball, he was a first team all-Big 10 selection at second base. Shomo also batted .448 with nine stolen bases. As a junior in basketball, he played in 18 games, scoring 86 points and was known for his aggressive play and steals.

His senior was cut short due to injury as he played only seven games, averaging 13.7 points.

In football, Shomo played safety for the Bucs and filled in at quarterback.

He had some college scholarship offers but instead chose to join the U.S. Army, becoming a paratrooper.

After two years in the military, Shomo enrolled at West Virginia Wesleyan and played cornerback for four years under legendary coach Sam Ross.

1999 B-UHS Baseball Team

The team set a school record for wins in a season, going 29-6 overall and winning the sectional title with wins over Elkins (17-3) and Lewis County (4-3).

The Bucs then won the regional title with victories over Philip Barbour (12-9) and Wheeling Park (16-6).

At the West Virginia baseball tournament, B-U lost 4-2 to Hurricane.

As a team, the Bucs batted .343 and only had 39 errors in 35 games. Their walk/strikeout ratio was 59/161.

They were led by head coach Mickey Tenney and assistant coaches Mike Gillespie and Brian Hinkle.

The B-UHS Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday in the high school commons.

Tickets are $15 each and must be purchased in advance as no tickets will be available at the door.
