Tigers remain alive to possibly host a playoff game

ELKINS — Entering its regular-season finale against Robert C. Byrd Friday night at home, Elkins is in position to not only qualify for the Class AAA playoffs but host a first-round game.

The Tigers (5-4) remained ninth in the WVSSAC playoff ratings, released Tuesday afternoon.

A win over the 16th-rated Flying Eagles (3-6) and the results from other games around the state the next two weeks could move Elkins into the top eight in the ratings.

Fairmont Senior (8-0) remained atop of the Class AAA ratings heading into its showdown with No. 3 Bridgeport (8-0) this Friday night at East-West Stadium.

Princeton (8-0) is second, Herbert Hoover (8-0) fourth and Nitro (7-1) fifth.

Philip Barbour and Tucker County are also in prime position to get a home game in the playoffs.

The Colts (6-2) are third in Class AA and the Mountain Lions (8-0) third in single-A.

Philip Barbour, which has never hosted a playoff game in football, ventures to Lincoln this Friday night, before returning home to face Preston in the regular-season finale on Nov. 8.

Tucker County visits No. 6 Petersburg (5-3) Friday and remains on the road against Class AAA, No. 15 Hampshire (5-4) in the finale.

Frankfort (8-0) is first in Class AA, Tug Valley is on top in Class A and Martinsburg, after a 17-12 win over then-No. 1 Spring Mills, is first in quad-A.

The top 16 teams in each class qualify for the state playoffs.

Starting at $3.92/week.
