Colts, Mountain Lions in playoff action today
ELKINS — While Philip Barbour faces a new opponent, Tucker County battles a familiar one today in quarterfinal action.
The sixth-seeded Colts (8-3) venture to Coal City to meet No. 3 Independence (7-3) at 4 p.m. in the first-ever meeting between the schools in football.
Philip Barbour punched its ticket to the quarterfinals for the second straight season under head coach Nick Mayle with a 28-17 victory over No. 11 Clay County last Saturday in the first home playoff game in school history.
Junior running back Logan Beam piled up 203 yards rushing and a score in the win. Freshman quarterback Robbie Jones added a pair of fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns.
Junior receivers Cam Bennett and Malachi Poling are other offensive weapons for the Colts.
Junior linebacker Tyler Vance leads the defense.
The Patriots defeated No. 14 James Monroe, 41-23, in the opening round in a contest played on Sunday.
The second-seeded Mountain Lions, meanwhile, host seventh-seed and PVC rival Pendleton County at 1:30 p.m. at R.H. Armstrong Memorial Field at Class of 1984 Alumni Stadium.
Tucker County can advance to the state semifinals for the second straight season with a victory.
The teams met back on Oct. 4 in Franklin with the Mountain Lions prevailing, 38-13.
In last Sunday’s 30-0 first-round win over another PVC foe, East Hardy, Reid Kisamore had a pair of touchdowns, including a 55-yard punt return, and quarterback Sam Marks connected with Kisamore for a 70-yard score, while running for another.
Senior Jared Reall leads the ground game and also is the top tackler on defense.
Senior receiver Garrett Wilfong is another weapon for head coach A.J. Rapp, whose team is 11-0 on the season.
The Wildcats (8-3) defeated No. 10 Meadow Bridge, 44-30, in the first round.
