Moore leads Warriors over Bulldogs, 47-20
DUNMORE — Haydon Moore ran for three touchdowns and threw for another to lead Pocahontas County to a 47-20 win over Tygarts Valley Friday night in the Battle of Cheat Mountain at Warrior Field.
The Warriors (2-7) jumped out to an 8-0 lead on the opening possession of the game, marching 49 yards in six plays.
The drive was capped off by an 8-yard touchdown run from Moore.
Quarterback Gavin Delair ran in the two-point conversion to give the hosts the early cushion.
The Bulldogs (2-7) cut the lead to 8-7 late in the opening quarter when Noah McAtee intercepted a Delair pass and raced down the field for a 91-yard touchdown.
With 8:30 remaining in the first half of play, Tygarts Valley’s defense came up big again and gave the visitors a 14-8 lead when Jaxon Drennen picked off a Logan Keatley pass and scampered in for a 95-yard touchdown.
Pocahontas County regained the lead late in the first half when Moore completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Morgan Beverage at the 3:38 mark. Moore ran in the two-point conversion to give the hosts a 16-14 edge.
The Warriors pushed the deficit to 22-14 at the 9:22 mark of the third quarter when Moore scored his second rushing touchdown of the game on a 5-yard run.
Moore then scored his third touchdown on the ground, a 20-yard scamper, that pushed the Pocahontas County lead to 28-14 with 7:11 left in the third quarter.
The Warriors made it 34-14 late in the third quarter when Austin Price scored on a 16-yard run at the 3:14 mark.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Pocahontas County senior lineman D.J. Wilfong got a carry out of the backfield and rumbled in for a 2-yard touchdown that pushed the lead to 40-14.
The Bulldogs cut the Warriors’ advantage to 40-20 with 8:02 remaining in the contest when Isaac Maxwell powered into the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown.
Price capped off the scoring for Pocahontas County at the 6:55 mark of the fourth quarter when he scored a 10-yard touchdown run to make it 47-20.
Tygarts Valley will entertain Oak Glen in its season finale next Friday evening.
The Warriors will end their campaign the same evening at Webster County.
