Bulldogs come alive in final quarter to best Warriors

MILL CREEK — Tygarts Valley coach Tom Wamsley wasn’t sure what to expect from his team in Tuesday night’s contest against Pocahontas County after a long layoff on the court.

The Class A, No. 8 Bulldogs hadn’t played in over two weeks, and for the first three-plus quarters it appeared to show.

But Wamsley’s squad pulled away in the final quarter to claim a 69-51 win against the regional foe Warriors at Weber-Wamsley Court.

“It was a war tonight,” Wamsley said. “Pocahontas capitalized on every mistake we made and shot very well.”

Carter Vandevender had the hot hand early for the Warriors — coming off a 37-point home loss to Pendleton County the night before — tallying 12 first-quarter points and 16 total in the first half as Tygarts Valley held a slim 34-33 cushion at intermission.

Vandevender finished with 18 points but only managed a pair of free throws over the final two cantos.

The Bulldogs built some breathing room in the third quarter with a 15-10 scoring edge before Jacob Wamsley came alive offensively in the final frame to help them pull away.

The junior netted 13 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth period.

“We shot terrible the entire game and didn’t adjust well to the physical play,” coach Wamsley said. “We were able to take control in the fourth quarter when we were patient on offense and locked in on defense.”

Kendall Armstrong chipped in 12 points and Ian Harris 10 for Tygarts Valley, which is now 5-1 and was slated to visit Clay-Battelle on Wednesday evening for a Mason-Dixon Conference matchup.

Dillon Dunz and Trenton Brock also hit in double figures for Pocahontas County with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Warriors (1-5) are scheduled to host Highland County (Va.) at 7:15 p.m. today.
