B-U’s Cornett, McDowell fall in state semis
HUNTINGTON — Buckhannon-Upshur seniors Ian Cornett and Andrew McDowell both lost in the Class AAA semifinals of their respective weight classes Friday night in the state wrestling tourney being held at Marshall Health Network Arena.
Cornett (120) lost by a technical fall decision to Washington’s Kai Plinski.
The senior opened the tournament with a pin fall victory against Parkersburg South’s Jordan Dearth on Thursday night, then pinned George Washington’s Owen Anderson in his first match on Friday afternoon.
Cornett will now be in consolation action this morning, guaranteed of at least a sixth-place finish and spot on the podium.
Plinski will meet Fairmont Senior’s Haydyn Spitznogle in tonight’s title match.
Meanwhile, McDowell (132) lost by technical fall to Parkersburg’s Stephen Myers on Friday night. He pinned Musselman’s Cohen Cernoch on Thursday, then took a major decision (17-9) victory against Huntington’s Shad Henry in his first match on Friday.
McDowell is also guaranteed of a sixth-place finish as he moves into the consolation bracket.
Meanwhile, Elkins High’s Tucker Twigg (138) earned a pin fall win against Midland Trail’s Brayden Moore on Thursday night in Class AA-A action.
The sophomore then lost by decision to Keyser’s Lane Metcalf on Friday afternoon before taking a 15-9 decision against Williamstown’s Dylan Pucella.
Twigg later fell to Tyler Consolidated’s Colsen Spragg in Friday’s evening session by a major decision.
Classmate Chiron Wing (175) lost by pin fall to North Marion’s Toby Michael on Thursday. He took a major decision (12-0) against Ravenswood’s Chayse Sook on Friday but was then eliminated from the tourney in a 14-12 setback to Independence’s Tyson McGinnis later in the day.
Tiger freshman Isaac Workman dropped both of his matches at 215.
For Philip Barbour, junior Malachi Cross (285) rebounded from pin fall loss to Keyser’s Jake Anderson on Thursday by pinning Buffalo’s Dave Sayne and Point Pleasant’s Noah Canterbury.
Cross was slated to face Grafton’s Braxton Rush on Friday evening.
Teammate and senior Ryan Morris went 1-2 in the tourney, earning a pin fall against Webster County’s Gary Cogar on Friday.
Action concludes today with the consolation and championship matches.
