Mountain Lions face East Hardy tonight in semis after besting Magnolia

CHARLESTON — A familiar foe awaits Tucker County in the Class A state semifinals this evening.

The second-seeded Mountain Lions (20-2) advanced with a 59-47 win over No. 7 Magnolia Thursday afternoon inside the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.

Earlier on Thursday, third-seed East Hardy moved on with a 51-34 victory against No. 6 Clay-Battelle to set up tonight’s third meeting of the season between the Potomac Valley Conference foes.

Tucker County swept the regular-season series against the Cougars.

Despite beating Magnolia by 30 points back in January, the Mountain Lions were challenged in Thursday’s contest.

The game was tied at 15-15 after one quarter and the Blue Eagles built a four-point lead, at 23-19, after a layup by Darin Shrimp with 5 minutes left in the first half.

But Tucker County went on a 15-0 run to close the quarter to lead 34-23 at halftime.

The Mountain Lions took their largest lead of the game at 16 points after Trevan Bonner’s bucket made it 45-29 with 1:58 left in the third quarter.

Magnolia got within 54-47 after Noah Hood’s 3-pointer with 4:19 remaining in regulation but came no closer as Tucker scored the game’s final five points.

Bonner finished with 15 points, five assists and two steals for the Mountain Lions, while Mikey Mitchell added 11 points, Garrett Wilfong eight points and 13 rebounds, Sam Marks eight points, five rebounds and two blocked shots and Xander Lambert eight rebounds.

Kingston Christen led the Blue Eagles with 19 points, followed by Dubale Greathouse with 16 points, Hunter Oates dished out five assists.

Magnolia finished the season with a 16-9 mark.
