ELKINS — Gabby Mahanes drove in eight runs, including cracking a grand slam, as Elkins claimed a 19-4 win over Tygarts Valley in the season opener for both teams Friday night at Betty Heckel Field.
Mahanes, who was 4 for 4 on the evening with four runs scored, cleared the bases with a shot to left and also had a two-run double in the third inning as the Lady Tigers erupted for 12 runs after the Lady Bulldogs had cut the lead to 7-4 in the top of the frame.
Winning pitcher Addison Carr was 3 for 3 with three RBIs for Elkins, while Morghan Cox added three RBIs, lead-off hitter Hailey Riffle went 2 for 2 with four runs scored and an RBI and freshman Rileigh Wingfield had a two-run triple.
Emily Smith had a two-run triple, Lilly Lanham a run-producing single and Kailen Yokum an RBI sacrifice fly for Tygarts Valley.
Carr went all three innings in earning the win. She gave up three hits and fanned five.

The Lady Tigers are slated to visit Calhoun County at 3 p.m. today.
The Lady Bulldogs travel to Webster County at 5 p.m. Monday for a doubleheader.

PHILIPPI — Philip Barbour pounded out 15 hits in blanking Big 10 Conference foe Robert C. Byrd, 15-0, in the season opener on Thursday night.
Stefanie Barker and Katelyn Cooper had three RBIs each for the Lady Colts.
Olivia Wilmoth added three hits and a pair of RBIs.
Avery McDaniel, Cooper, Barker and Lindsey Moss all had two hits apiece.
McDaniel earned the win on the mound, going all three innings, giving up three hits and striking out five.
