Tigers capture 11-0 win over Irish in opener

CLARKSBURG — Caleb McCauley tossed a five-inning gem and Elkins collected 11 hits en route to an 11-0 win over Notre Dame Thursday in the season opener for both teams.

McCauley struck out nine and walked just one batter as the game ended after the bottom of the fifth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The Tigers led 4-0 before erupting for seven runs in the fifth inning.

Jakob Shiflett cracked a two-run triple as part of the fifth-inning outburst, while Dyer Barger, McCauley and Braden Cooper had RBI singles, and Blayne Thompson an RBI groundout.

Cooper finished with three hits and three RBIs on the night.

Shiflett and Trent Stone added two hits each, and Owen Stanley an RBI sacrifice fly.

Dominick Bombardiere took the loss for the Irish. He allowed eight runs on nine hits, striking out six and walking one.

Kaiden Posey had a pair of hits for Notre Dame at the plate.

Elkins returns to action at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grafton. The Tigers will then face Brooke at 1:30 p.m.
