Area teams competing in McDonald’s Classic

CLARKSBURG — Buckhannon-Upshur, Philip Barbour and Pendleton County are among a talented field competing in the two-day McDonald’s Classic.

Games are being held at host Bridgeport High School, Frank Loria Memorial Field, The Bridge Sports Complex, Robert C. Byrd High School and South Harrison High School.

The Bucs dropped a pair of games on Friday, falling to Washington in their first game and Wheeling Park later in the nightcap.

Washington plated six runs in the first inning en route to a 9-2 win B-U in a contest played at Frank Loria Memorial Field.

Drahden Rice took the loss in 2/3 innings pitched, allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits.

Wyatt Mason and Jacob Frye finished in relief.

Mason went 2 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on one hit and striking out one, while Frye allowed one run on four hits with one strikeout.

Landon Marple and Weldon Zirkle had RBIs for B-U.

Landon Brady, Svenlen Dupree and Gabriel Showen each knocked in two runs for the Patriots.

Ryan Kelly earned the win, scattering one run on six hits over five innings. He fanned five.

In the second game held at Robert C. Byrd High School, the Bucs built a 5-0 first-inning lead but eventually dropped a 9-7 verdict to Wheeling Park, which scored five runs over the final two innings.

Marple, who recently signed with Frostburg State, cracked a two-run homer in the first frame for B-U, while Mason had a run-producing double, Ethan Garvin an RBI fielder’s choice and Dawson Tenney an RBI single.

Coldin Burkhart had a two-run triple for the Patriots.

The Bucs (6-7) are scheduled to face Parkersburg South at 12:15 p.m. today at Frank Loria Memorial Field.

Pendleton County, meanwhile, lost a 13-3 decision to Big 10 Conference member North Marion Friday afternoon at Frank Loria Memorial Field.

The Huskies jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three innings, before the Wildcats answered with three runs in the top of the fourth inning on Cooper Smith’s two-run single and an error.

North Marion tacked on two runs in the home-half of the frame and single runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to put the 10-run mercy rule in place.

Ryder Bland had a two-run double for the Huskies, while Rylan Craig an inside-the-park homer and an RBI triple.

Chase Owens took the loss, giving up 11 runs on 13 hits in 3 2/3 innings of work. He fanned four and walked two.

Bland went four innings to secure the victory. He allowed three runs on four hits, struck out six and issued one free pass.

James Vincell had a pair of hits for the Wildcats in the setback.

Pendleton County (6-5) and Philip Barbour will square off at 11:15 a.m. today at The Bridge Sports Complex.

The Colts will then battle Williamstown at 7 p.m. at Bridgeport High School.
