Whitmire tosses no-hitter as Patriots blank Bucs
B-U’s Westfall limits Wheeling Park to just six hits, fans seven in 1-0 setback in regional tourney play
WHEELING — Kolten Whitmire tossed a no-hitter as top-seed Wheeling Park blanked fifth-seed Buckhannon-Upshur, 1-0, Tuesday in Class AAAA, Region 1 action.
Whitmire struck out 12 and issue just one free pass to outduel the Bucs’ Jerin Westfall, who had a strong outing on the hill as well.
Westfall gave up six hits in going the distance, fanning seven and not issuing a free pass or extra-base hit.
The Patriots scored the only run of the game in the sixth inning when Nate Simon led off with a single and moved to second on Ryland Robb’s sacrifice bunt and later scored on a wild pitch.
B-U’s best scoring chance off Whitmire came in the fourth inning.
Kesling reached on a fielder’s choice and Brody McDaniels drew a two-out walk.
But Whitemire registered a strikeout to end the threat.
Jaxon Updegraff went 2 for 3 at the plate for Wheeling Park.
In a cleanly played affair, neither team committed an error.
B-U (10-15) eliminated second-seed John Marshall, 5-4, Wednesday in an elimination game of the top bracket of the tourney and will now visit Wheeling Park (20-9) again this evening, needing two wins over the Patriots to advance to the best-of-three regional series.
A second championship will be held on Friday, if necessary.
