Elkins High girls finish second in the Champions Cup

PARKERSBURG — The WVSSAC has announced the Class AAA winners of The Health Plan Champions Cup.

The Health Plan Champions Cup honors the leading boys’ and girls’ athletic programs in each of the WVSSAC’s four classifications. Standings are based on performances across a variety of sports, with points awarded for success in state championship events. Teams are also awarded points based on the previous year’s graduation rate.

Class AAA Girls

Herbert Hoover finished with 678.5 points after recording points in several sports, including runner-up finishes in volleyball, swimming, and track and field. The Huskies also placed sixth in cross country, reached the state semifinals in softball, and advanced to the state quarterfinals in tennis.

Elkins placed second with 582 points. The Tigers won a state championship in swimming, finished third in cross country, fourth in track and reached the state semifinals in soccer and the quarterfinals in volleyball.

Class AAA Boys

Ripley’s balanced performances helped the Vikings secure the boys’ title with 668 points. The Vikings won a state championship in baseball, finished third in golf, fifth in wrestling, reached the quarterfinals in both basketball and tennis and advanced to the regional finals in soccer.

Elkins was sixth, earning state championships in swimming and cross country.
