Little League state tourney begins today in Elkins
ELKINS –The Little League 10-12-year-old state tournament begins today at Melvin Heckel Fields at Riverbend Park.
A total of 14 teams from around the state are competing for the title, with the winner advancing to the Southeast Region Tournament to be held July 31-Aug. 5 at Warner Robins, Georgia.
The teams are broken down into two divisions — Mountaineer and Herd.
Games will be held daily in the double-elimination tournament through Wednesday.
The winner and runner-up from each division moves on to the championship round set to begin with Thursday’s semifinals.
The title game will be held on Friday.
Competing in the Mountaineer Division will be Barboursville (District 1 champion), Hurricane (District 3 champion), Central Greenbrier (District 4 champion), Bridgeport (District 5 champion), Summersville (District 8 runner-up), Logan (District 2 runner-up) and Martinsburg (District 6 runner-up).
The Herd Division includes Chapmanville (District 2 champion), Jefferson (District 6 champion), Belington-Barbour County (District 8 champion), Huntington (District 1 runner-up), Winfield (District 3 runner-up), Shady Spring (District 4 runner-up) and Fringe (District 5 runner-up).
District 8 is the host for the tournament and will be represented by champion Belington-Barbour County and runner-up Summersville.
Belington team members include Callen Cherok, Silas Morgan, Cooper Ryan, Carter Morrison, Easton Workman, Sawyer Sublett, Ryan Bolyard, Hunter Harris, Scott Wright, Ryder Kirkpatrick, Landon Wolfe and Cordell Blake.

Belington faces Chapmanville at 11:30 a.m. today in one of three games on the card in Herd Division action.
Shady Spring and Winfield battle at 2 p.m. and Jefferson squares off against Fringe at 4:30 p.m.
Mountaineer Division contests today include Summersville vs. Logan at 11 a.m., Martinsburg vs. Central Greenbrier at 1:30 p.m. and Hurricane vs. Bridgeport at 4 p.m.
The Belington-Chapmanville victor faces Huntington at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Admission is free for spectators attending the tournament.
