Mountaineer Insurance gets walk-off win against Fordland

ELKINS — Zach Thompson’s RBI walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted top-seed Mountaineer Insurance to a 5-4 win over fourth-seed Elkins Fordland Tuesday night in Fuzz Jones City Tournament action at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.

Fordland had scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead but Mountaineer answered with a single run in the home-half of the frame to force extra innings.

Reliever Kenny Kohler retired Fordland in order in the top of the eighth inning to set the stage for Thompson’s game-winning hit.

After Jonah Daugherty, who had two hits on the night, cracked a one-out single and advanced to second on an error, Ashton Kohler was intentionally walked and a balk sent Daugherty to third base.

Thompson’s single to left then plated Daugherty.

James Linger had a two-run single and another run crossed on an error to help treat Fordland to a 4-3 cushion in the top of the seventh.

Mountaineer tied the game at 4-4 on an error in the bottom of the seventh.

Ryan James went the first four innings for Mountaineer, not allowing a hit and surrendering one run. The left-hander fanned six.

Kenny Kohler went the final four innings, allowing three hits and striking out five.

Owen Stanley went the first seven frames for Fordland, striking out 13 and giving up five hits.

The tournament continues through Saturday’s championship game, with a single game scheduled for today at 6 p.m. as Mountaineer Insurance faces third-seed Davis Trust in a winner’s bracket clash.

The victor advances to Saturday’s title game at noon, needing just one win to capture the championship.

A second title game will follow at 2:30 p.m., if necessary.

Davis Trust defeated second-seed McDonald’s, 11-2, in Tuesday’s late game as Trent Stone tossed a three-hitter and struck out 14.

Stone and Silas Lewis had two RBIs each.

A pair of elimination games were slated for Wednesday evening — Citizens Bank of West Virginia vs. Elkins Fordland and Broughton’s Sports vs. McDonald’s.

Starting at $3.92/week.
