Morgantown holds off Martinsburg to capture Class AAAA title

CHARLESTON — Quarterback Maddox Twigg accounted for all four of his team’s scores and Morgantown held off a late Martinsburg rally to capture the Class AAAA state title, 28-21, Friday afternoon at UC Stadium and Laidley Field.

It was the first title for the Mohigans since 2005 and sixth in school history.

Trailing 28-14, the Bulldogs cut the lead to seven on a 3-yard run by Terrell Cofield with 4:30 remaining in regulation.

After forcing a Morgantown punt, Martinsburg started its final drive on its own 41-yard line with just under 2 minutes to play.

Facing a fourth-and-seven, Brian Dick hit Boston Todd for 10 yards to move the ball to the Mohigan 10-yard line with 25 ticks left to play.

After spiking the ball to stop the clock, Dick picked up two yards and was able to get out of bounds but on third down, he was stopped on a 1-yard gain with the clock continuing to run.

On fourth down, Dick inadvertently again spiked the ball for a turnover on downs.

The third-seeded Bulldogs (11-3) had handed top-seed Morgantown (13-1) a 34-6 loss during regular-season play at home.

Friday’s outcome, however, was much different with more on the line as Morgantown took a 6-0 lead on Twigg’s 20-yard run on a fourth-and-nine play.

Martinsburg answered when Dick took a pitch and found the end zone to make it 7-6 with 3 minutes remaining in the first half.

Morgantown responded in a big way to seize control, putting up 15 unanswered points before the break.

Twigg’s 2-yard run and conversion run put the Mohigans in front 14-7, then Morgantown recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff to the find the end zone again when Twigg hit Tanzer George for a 21-yard touchdown extend the lead to 21-7 at halftime.

The Mohigans kept the momentum to start the third quarter when good field position after a 47-yard kickoff return from Carter Cooper led to Twigg’s third rushing score of the day, this from 4 yards out, to treat Morgantown to a 21-point advantage.

Dick’s 28-yard scamper on the Bulldogs’ next series cut the margin to 14 with 3:44 to go in the third frame.

Twigg finished with 135 yards on the ground and added an additional 181 yards through the air, completing 7 of 17 attempts.

Cooper snagged four receptions for 99 yards and George added three for 82.

Dick, who also rushed for 95 yards, completed 13 of 18 passes for 177 yards, with Todd collecting 11 receptions for 136 yards.

In Friday’s late game, top-seed Wheeling Central faced No. 3 Clay-Battelle for the Class A championship.
