ELKINS -- Davis Health System is warning area residents about a phone scam that uses "caller ID spoofing."
"We are aware of two recent incidents where a local resident has received a call that appears to be coming from Davis Medical Center with the caller offering to lower the interest on their credit card," said Tracy Fath, vice president of Marketing and Development. "These calls were not made by a representative of Davis Medical Center. We're making the public aware so that they do not provide any personal or credit card information to these callers."
Caller ID spoofing is a manipulation of the caller ID feature that allows a scammer to disguise their true identity. In this case the caller is disguising himself as a representative of Davis Medical Center.
"Davis Medical does not make phone calls regarding a patient's personal credit card accounts," Fath added.
If someone receives one of these calls, they should hang up and call Davis Medical Center's patient representative at 304-637-3773 for assistance.
