ELKINS -- Healthcare is moving toward patient- and family-centered care and Davis Medical Center believes it is important for healthcare providers to listen and act on what the patient and their family members have to say about their care, its delivery and its design.
"We're forming a Patient and Family Advisory Councilto focus on improving the patient experience and the quality of care at DMC," said Patient Experience Coordinator Arvela J. Koerner BSN, RN, ACM. "Patients want to be engaged in decisions that affect their well-being, and research has shown that healthcare providers that partner with patients and their families achieve better clinical, quality and safety outcomes."
The benefit of the PFAC is two-fold. Patients and families benefit by having their opinions valued and heard, and through more engaged participation in designing improved care. Davis Medical Center expands their capability to develop relevant and responsive programs and services.
The volunteer committee will consist of health care providers, former hospital patients and family members, and frontline staff. They will meet monthly.
"PFAC committee work could range from improving signage, to developing policy, to the design of patient care areas," said Koerner. "We're looking for people who have thoughtful feedback and are ready to partner with us in order to improve the patient experience at DMC."
Applications to become a member of the PFAC are available on the health system website homepage at https://www.davishealthsystem.org/about-us/advisorycouncil. Applications must be completed and returned on or before Sept. 1. More information is available by calling Arvela Koerner at 304-637-3773 or emailing her at koernera@dhswv.com.
