Healthy Heart event set today

ELKINS -- February is American Heart Month, and Davis Medical Center wants to help local residents take charge of their health by offering a free Healthy Heart educational forum from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the ground floor cafeteria overflow.

"We're providing insight and guidance from experts at Davis Medical Center on how to achieve better heart health," said Mindy Parsons, RN, clinical charge nurse for DMC Cardiac Rehab. "Guests can learn about heart disease and risk factors, medications, diet and much more."

The program features a clinical provider from the West Virginia University Medicine Heart & Vascular Institute. Other panelists include pharmacist Amanda Smith, RPh; dietitian Sonya Phares, RD; Debbie Williams, RN and Becky Piehler, RN, and Mindy Parsons, RN. Topics will include strength training for a healthy heart; target heart rates; plant-focused diets for combating heart disease and inflammation; and cardiovascular disease.

Each year, communities and health professionals across the nation target February as a time to raise awareness to fight heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women. Heart disease claims the lives of more women each year than all forms of cancer combined.

Healthy snacks and a free take-home with information will be provided. Reservations are encouraged by calling the Cardiac Rehab Center at 304-637-3623.

"We are committed to helping our communities have better health by empowering them with information," added Parsons. "We hope many people will take advantage of this valuable, free opportunity."
