D&E students prepare to teach science

1 min read

ELKINS -- Davis & Elkins College education students are prepared to teach the next generation of science students after completing a new class during the fall semester. With a special interest in instructing and mentoring future science teachers, D&E alumna and Trustee Nancy Evans-Bennett, '66, and her husband, James Messersmith, both experts in the science field, led the course.

Students in the class Science to Children K-6 gained an understanding of how to teach their future students to think critically, draw conclusions and apply what they learn to solve problems. The course stressed the use of research-based strategies including hands-on learning, assessment and differentiated instruction to meet diverse student needs.

Evans-Bennett and Messersmith also took the students to the West Virginia Science Teacher Association Conference at Stonewall Jackson Resort. With the theme "Science Teaching in Superposition," the event included more than 250 science teachers, higher education leaders, preservice teachers and state representatives.
