Marijuana found at Elkins High

By Brooke Binns 2 min read

ELKINS -- Two Elkins High School students will be facing consequences determined by the school system after being found in possession of contraband -- including drugs -- this week.

Officials said Thursday a call was received at the high school Wednesday morning reporting two students were "smoking marijuana at the bus stop."

The students were called into the office once they arrived at school, and a search was conducted.

Sgt. R.W. Belt of the Elkins Police Department said 1.99 grams of marijuana was confiscated from a female juvenile at Elkins High School on Wednesday. In addition, the female student was found in possession of a pocket knife and cigarettes.

Belt said the female juvenile told officials the items belonged to a male juvenile who later confirmed the statement made by the female.

Schools in West Virginia follow Policy 4373, Expected Behavior in Safe and Supportive Schools, as a guideline for addressing issues such as this.

Elkins High School Principal Russ Collett said, "Fundamentally, our procedure is to check Policy 4373 to make decisions based on what is best for our students, and we try to be as consistent with those decisions as possible."

Policy 4373 states any student may not "unlawfully possess, use, be under the influence of, distribute or sell any substance containing alcohol, over-the-counter drugs, prescription drugs, marijuana, narcotics, any other substance included in the Uniform Controlled Substances Act as described in WV Code 60A-1-101, et seq., or any paraphernalia intended for the manufacture, sale and/or use of illegal substances in any building/area under the control of a county school system, including all activities or events sponsored by the county school district."

Consequences may include expulsion or suspension, the policy reads.

Elkins High School officials declined to comment specifically on Wednesday's incident. Calls placed to the Randolph County Board Office were not returned.
