Hospital celebrates first phase of wellness center

ELKINS -- Hospital officials, community members and patients gathered Monday to celebrate a new cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation facility at Davis Medical Center.
The Davis Wellness Institute for Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehabilitation will offer a more convenient place for patients to exercise and meet with health care providers. It features state-of-the-art exercise equipment and a shower, as well as much more space than the current rehab area, which is located in a separate building near the hospital.
Dr. Catherine Chua, chief medical officer at DMC, said the new facility is the first phase of the wellness center, which is located on the second floor of the DMC Outpatient Center. It is adjacent to West Virginia University Medicine's Heart & Vascular Institute.
"We hope to expand over the foreseeable future," Chua said, explaining this will offer the community easier access to local rehabilitation care, nutrition advice, health-based education and more. "That's our hope … so when you come here, it's all about wellness and prevention."
"We're tickled to death that they're moving to a new place," said Elaine Valentine, of Glenmore, explaining that the current rehab area can be crowded and uncomfortable. Her husband, Bill Valentine, is one-third of the way through his cardiac rehabilitation after having a heart procedure in September.
She added that everyone does a great job, and she has seen a tremendous improvement in her husband's well-being.
"He feels so much better," Elaine Valentine said.
