Walking program slated to begin

ELKINS — Many people around the area are gearing up to take part in a community program that is designed to increase activity.

The program, 100 Miles in 100 Days, challenges people in the community to get out and become active by committing 20 minutes every day to walk at least one mile.

Davis Health System Marketing Supervisor Rachel Phillips said that the event has been an annual happening for at least 10 years in partnership with the West Virginia University Healthcare Wellness Program.

“The goal is to get everybody out and moving on a regular basis and get people active while the weather is nice,” Phillips said.

To date, Phillips reported that 560 people have signed up to take part.

“In the last few years, as a group, we have completed over 80,000 miles,” Phillips said. “This was from one year.”

Anyone who wishes to participate can sign up by visiting dhs100miles.com.

“They can fill out a registration form, an information packet and their mileage log at this site,” Phillips said.

Participants can register as part of a team or as individual.

She added that a number of organizations throughout the community will be participating in the program, including a team from Randolph County EMS.

The program begins Sunday and ends on Labor Day. Registration closes at midnight on Monday.

At the end of the program, logs can be submitted to Phillips at phillips.rachel@dhswv.com or in person at DHS.
