Pipeline project open house event set

BUCKHANNON — Officials with the Atlantic Coast Pipeline project will host an open house next month to allow community members to ask questions about construction that will soon begin in the region.

Project team members will provide information on construction activities, including safety measures in place to protect the community, crew members and the environment. A short video will be shown to explain what landowners can expect, as well.

For the question-and-answer portion of the open house, attendees will have the opportunity to ask staff about the project.

“We’ll have engineers. We’ll have environmentalists. We’ll have biologists. We’ll have just about everybody related to the project that questions might come from,” said Mike Cozad, community liaison.

Along with the open house, a job fair also will take place.

Contractors, local unions and inspection companies that will be hiring folks for the project will be at the fair to discuss training and job opportunities.

The open house and job fair will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. April 11 at the Mountain View Event Center in Upshur County.

A second opportunity is scheduled from 5 to 7:30 p.m. April 12 at the Pocahontas Parks and Recreation in Marlinton.

During the Upshur County Commission meeting Thursday morning, Cozad provided commissioners with a brief update on the 600-mile project.

He said construction, which was slated to begin at the end of March, has been delayed by about a month. The reason behind the delay is permits in Virginia are not all in place.

“They did some things over there that are causing some delays with the way that they did their water permits,” he said, noting all of the permits in the other states are placed.

Construction work should begin in about 30 days, Cozad said.

“We expect to get the permits and the green light here at any day, so as soon as the green light is given to all the contractors, then they’ll start bringing their management teams in and get things started,” he said. “Then the major part of the workforce will follow in behind that.”
