ELKINS -- An Elkins High School math teacher has been selected as one of 10 West Virginian educators to receive this year's Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award.
Recognized for her ongoing efforts to enrich the lives of her students, Susan McCauley was honored Thursday morning in front of the student body. McCauley was presented with a personal cash award and a trophy from Bill Haines, a representative of ArchCoal Inc.
"It's quite an honor, and I'm not sure that I do anything that's extraordinary compared to other teachers," she said in an interview Thursday. "We all work really hard to make sure our students are successful. … I'm very, very fortunate and very blessed to be working in EHS."
Teachers from throughout the state are nominated for the annual award, and a panel of past award recipients selects the top 10 from among all those completing the comprehensive and rigorous application process, according to information from ArchCoal. It is West Virginia's longest-running, privately sponsored teacher recognition program, now in its 29th year.
After McCauley was notified in February that an anonymous person had nominated her for the award, students and staff wrote letters of recommendation as part of the award's application process.
She said she appreciated those letters -- and said they likely were a big factor in her selection.
McCauley is in her 18th year of teaching, including her first two years in North Carolina and the rest in West Virginia. She teaches math classes at EHS and also helps with the Math Field Day program.
The Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award recipients are being honored throughout this month, and the full list of winners will be released soon.
Teachers of grades kindergarten to 12, including vocational, special education and Title 1 are eligible to be nominated, according to information from ArchCoal's website. Teachers are nominated by students, peers and members of their community, and they compete for $3,500 annual awards.
The nominee must be an active, full-time teacher with at least three years of experience.
