ELKINS -- Candidates for the March 5 Elkins municipal election will take part in a public forum at Davis & Elkins College tonight.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. in Madden Student Center on the D&E campus. The event is presented by Polis, a non-partisan D&E student political group, and Generation Randolph.
All candidates for Elkins City Council and for mayor have been invited to participate.
The contested races include, for a First Ward council seat, incumbent Bob Woolwine and challengers Judy Guye and Phillips B. Kolsun.
In Second Ward, the candidates are C. Michael Hinchman and Carrie Shupp. Incumbent Gene Ochsendorf is not seeking reelection.
In Fifth Ward, incumbent Linda Vest is being challenged by Howard P. Knapp II, Joe Sabatino and Robin Spicer.
Running unoposed are Third Ward's Chris Lowther and Fourth Ward's Marilynn Cuonzo, as is Mayor Van Broughton.
The open city council seats are four-year terms, while the mayor's position is a two-year term.
Early in-person voting is underway now at City Hall at 401 Davis Avenue. Early voting will continue through Saturday. The hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
On Election Day, polling places will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Persons in line at 7:30 p.m. will be allowed to cast their votes.
The polling places for the March 5 municipal election are as follows:
Ward 1-- Church of God Family Worship Center at 1402 Taylor Avenue;
Ward 2 -- Mountain State Forest Festival Building at 101 Lough Street;
Ward 3 -- Day's Inn at 1200 Harrison Avenue;
Ward 4 -- Randolph County Courthouse Annex at 4 Randolph Avenue;
Ward 5 -- Elkins City Hall at 401 Davis Avenue.
