Two new council members sworn in

ELKINS -- Two new Elkins City Council members were sworn into office at City Hall Friday, surrounded by their friends and families.

Incoming First Ward representative Judy Guye and new Second Ward Councilman G. Michael Hinchman were sworn in by City Clerk Jessica Sutton. Following the swearing-in ceremony, they took part in a training session for new council members Friday afternoon.

Also sworn in Friday were Linda Vest, who won re-election in Fifth Ward, and Third Ward incumbent Chris Lowther, who ran unopposed. Fourth Ward incumbent Marilynn Cuonzo, who also ran unopposed, could not attend Friday's ceremony and was sworn in earlier in the week, Sutton said.

Mayor Van Brougton, who was unopposed in his bid for his fourth term, was sworn in beside his father, former Elkins mayor Virgil Broughton, and his mother, Dee.

"I'd like to thank everybody for coming out. I'm excited with our new council, our new administration and a couple new elected officials," Broughton said at the close of the ceremony. "I see some great stuff happening over the next two years. We all just need to work together and agree to disagree. And I know at the end of the day, with dotting our 'I's' and crossing our 'T's', we can say we gave our all and did the best for the citizens of Elkins.

"So we'll get started on Monday, and I'm really excited with the new adventures that are going to happen in the next two years," the mayor said.

The first council meeting for Guye and Hincham will be the next scheduled meeting, set for 7 p.m. Thursday in City Hall. The city also will offer a meeting for residential property owners along the North Randolph Avenue route concerning possible annexation at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the West Virginia Wood Technology Center.
