Applause to the hundreds of volunteers who have donated so much time and effort to present the 82nd Mountain State Forest Festival this week in downtown Elkins. The events and activities have all run smoothly and thousands of people have enjoyed themselves at West Virginia's oldest festival this week. Congratulations to Queen Silvia LXXXII Alia Danae Figueroa as she reigns over the Grand Feature Parade this afternoon.
Applause to Elkins officials and residents who collected funds to provide the second annual "All Kids Ride Day" at the Mountain State Forest Festival. Last year, funds were raised to assist children in purchasing hand stamps for the Gambill Amusement rides on the Friday afternoon of Festival week. This year, Mayor Van Broughton, Judy Schoonover Ritchie and Michelle Rowe Williams, among others, worked to provide passes for kids to enjoy the carnival rides.
Applause to the Elkins-Randolph County Tourism Convention and Visitors Bureau, which was recently awarded the 2018 Governor's Award for Regional Cooperation at the Governor's Conference on Tourism in Morgantown. Also at the conference, G'na Stephens, CEO of the Gandy Dancer Theatre, was awarded the 2018 West Virginia Tourism Professional of the Year.
Applause to the West Virginia Senate for making a quick decision to not convict Supreme Court Justice Beth Walker of the lone article of impeachment for which she was charged. After nearly two hours of deliberation behind closed doors Tuesday, the Senate voted 32-1 in favor of not convicting Walker, the justice with the shortest tenure on the court. Only Sen. Stephen Baldwin, D-Greenbrier, voted to convict. The Senate made the right decision on Walker, but we doubt the remaining high court justices facing impeachment will see the same result. And Supreme Court Justice Allen Loughry, whose federal trial on a 22-count indictment began this week, should certainly not expect to escape punishment.
