Strong second half carries TV girls over Philip Barbour

PHILIPPI -- Tygarts Valley High School junior Abby Lanham peppered the net with four 3-pointers while garnering a game-high 23 points to help the Lady Bulldogs remain undefeated with a 70-45 verdict over Philip Barbour on Friday evening.

After a 12-12 stalemate to start the second stanza, Tygarts Valley carried a 23-20 lead into the halftime locker room.

The Bulldogs recorded a 27-16 third-frame advantage build a 50-36 lead entering the final canto.

Continuing with its second half outburst of scoring, TVHS put up a 20-9 fourth frame to seal the road win.

"We came out sluggish in the first half and missed a lot of shots," TV coach Nancy Lewis said. "We came out in the third quarter and picked up our game.

"Our defense was a lot better and led to us having success on the offensive end."

Philip Barbour freshman forward Alyssa Hill wrangled in a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Marissa Scheifelbein with eight points and four rebounds and Dystonie Simmons five points and four boards also chipped in.

Abby Harris added 15 points and seven assists for the winners, while Emily Ball had 10 points and eight rebounds, Abigail Cabaniss six caroms, Courtney Haddix five caroms and five assists and Abby Lanham four steals.

Philip Barbour (2-5) will resume play next Friday when hosting Big 10 foe Liberty.

Tygarts Valley (5-0) will visit Pocahontas County at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday for a makeup game.

In the JV game, Tygarts Valley claimed a 38-33 win as Claire Smith scored 13, Kendal Cutright eight and Landrie Lanham seven.

Kiana Bolyard had nine points for the Lady Colts.
