Battler baseball squad splits Great Midwest opening series

NORTH CANTON, Ohio — The Alderson Broaddus baseball team went 2-2 in its Great Midwest opening series against Walsh on Friday and Saturday.

Game 1

In the series opener, AB tallied a 13-9 win with the offense piling up 15 hits.

With the game tied 3-3 after five, Todd Sekowski led off the sixth with a home run. The Battlers tacked on four more with two runs batted in by Tyler Amedure and Aaron Saunders to go up 8-3.

In the seventh, AB extended their lead scoring four more times including a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double by Carson Comer. The Battlers tacked on one more in the eighth and held off a late Cavalier rally to earn the victory.

Six different Battlers recorded multiple hits, including three hits each for Saunders and Comer.

Gordon Swiger picked up the win on the bump going 5.2 innings allowing four runs, two earned with three strikeouts.

Game 2

Friday’s game two was suspended halfway through the fifth and resumed on Saturday. The Cavaliers took the contest 17-4.

Walsh scored three times in each of the first three innings and then plated six in the fourth to take a 15-1 advantage. The Battlers struck three times in the fifth to trim the lead to 15-4, but that was as close as the Battlers would get.

Chasen Claus and Saunders each picked up two hits. Zack Salmon took the loss on the hill.

Game 3

After two offensive battles in the opening doubleheader, the Battlers earned a 5-3 victory in game one on Saturday.

Ryan Varley pitched a gem for the Battlers pitching a complete game allowing three runs only one earned with five strikeouts and two walks.

The Battlers trailed 2-0 early, but Vincenzo Rauso tied the game with a two-run single.

Amedure gave AB the lead with a two-run single of his own.

Saunders rounded out the scoring for AB with an RBI single.

Game 4

Nine innings wasn’t enough for the finale of the series as it took 12 innings for the Cavaliers to win 4-3.

Amedure gave the Battlers the lead in the fifth with a solo home run, but Walsh answered with three runs in the bottom half of the frame.

AB rallied in the seventh to tie the game.

An error, two wild pitches and an RBI groundout brought in two Battlers runs.

Walsh walked-off with a run in the bottom of the 12th.

The Battlers are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Columbus, Ohio for a four game conference series against Ohio Dominican.
