HUTTONSVILLE — Pendleton County erupted for 12 first-inning runs en route to a 19-2 victory over Tygarts Valley Tuesday evening in non-conference action.
The Lady Wildcats (1-1), who dropped a 14-0 decision at the hands of Petersburg in their opener on Friday, wasted little time jumping out to the early advantage.
A handful of free passes on walks, coupled with a two-run double from Kalee Woodward helped fuel the surge in the first set for the visitors.
“I think we just had a lot of first-game jitters in that first inning,” Tygarts Valley coach Wendy Walden said. “But I did see some positives I think we can build on going forward.”
The Lady Bulldogs’ lone hit and only runs of the contest game in the home-half of the first. With two outs in the set, Courtney Haddix drew a walk to get things started. Catcher Emily Ball then stepped in and belted a two-run home run to left-center field.
Haddix took the loss for Tygarts Valley (0-1) in two innings pitched.
Abby Lanham tossed an inning of relief.
“I think our fielding looked fairly good today,” Walden said. “We just need to get some more work in with our hitting and I think we will be fine.”
The Lady Bulldogs will return to action at 5 p.m. Tuesday when they hit the road to face rival Tucker County.
