PHILIPPI -- After 11 innings, 15 total pitchers and 25 runs the Alderson Broaddus baseball team claimed a 13-12 victory over visiting Fairmont State Wednesday night at Jack Funk Field.
In the 11th inning, Trent Humphreys led off with a hit-by-pitch and was moved to second on an Aaron Valentine sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout, Tyler Amedure hit a hard ground ball down the third base line that was picked by the third baseman, but an errant throw allowed Amedure to reach and Humphreys to score from second and give the Battlers a walk-off win.
With the score tied, 7-7, AB used four hits, a hit-by-pitch and two Fairmont State errors to push across five runs and build a 12-7 advantage. The Falcons answered back with a run in the sixth and four more in the eighth to knot the game at 12.
Trailing 5-2, the Battlers posted a five spot in the fourth. Aaron Saunders led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a Humphreys double. Carson Comer promptly singled home both runners to trim the lead to 5-4. Vincenzo Rauso reached on a fielder’s choice, and a Falcon misplay allowed Comer to be safe at second. Amedure gave AB its first lead of the game with a three-run blast over the fence in left center.
The seven, eight and nine batters for the Battlers, Saunders, Humphreys and Comer, combined to go 7-for-12 with eight runs scored and four RBI. Saunders collected three hits, while Comer and Humphreys each had a pair.
Gordon Swiger picked up the win pitching two innings of scoreless relief. He didn't allow a hit and struck out one. Braden Mullenix also had a solid relief outing going an inning and a third striking out all four batters he faced.
The Battlers are scheduled to host Kentucky Wesleyan at 1 p.m. today at Jack Funk Field.
