EHS’ Gainer earns Big 10 honors again

PB’s Carpenter named top coach; Colts place three on first team

ELKINS  -- Elkins, Buckhannon-Upshur and Philip Barbour were well represented on the All-Big 10 Conference baseball team released on Monday.

For the second consecutive season, Tigers hurler Matthew Gainer was named the conference's Pitcher of the Year.

The senior lefty, who recently signed to play baseball at WVU Tech, finished with a 6-3 record on the mound this season. He struck out 82 batters in 49 innings pitched and helped lead the Tigers to a 21-win season.

The Colts, meanwhile, placed three players on the first team as sophomore infielder Gage Bibey, sophomore outfielder Tanner Corder and junior utility player Will Knight were all honored.

Buccaneer senior infielder Alek Seech was also named to the first team.

Six-time Class AA state champion Bridgeport had five players on the first team. They included Nick Stalnaker, Drew Harbert, Ryan Goff, Vincenzo Cava and Tim Via.

Liberty's Noah Leggett, Lincoln's Baron Swiger, Fairmont Senior's Conner Neal and East Fairmont's Brandon Corley, Broderick Rohrbaugh and Cole Peschl rounded out the first unit.

Lincoln's Hunter Moore was named Big 10 Player of the Year, while Philip Barbour's Jonathon Carpenter was named the league's top coach.

Elkins and B-U placed two players each on the second team.

Making the second unit for the Tigers were infielder Nathan Cooper and outfielder Alan Bennett.

The Bucs' second-team honorees were pitcher Andrew Herron and outfielder Logan Bailey. Philip Barbour pitcher Nick Hamrick also earned second-team accolades.

The remainder of the second team includes Fairmont Senior's Cameron Hines, Elijah Posey and Chris Phares, East Fairmont's Trey Hissam and Garrett Wilkerson, Robert C. Byrd's Grant Lowther, Lincoln's Pat Bart, Preston's Cory Pyles, Grafton's Garrett Moats, Lewis County's Chase Freeman and North Marion's Levi Clemons.
