McDonald’s the top seed in event at Robin Harvey Memorial Field
ELKINS — The 2019 Fuzz Jones City Tournament for the Elkins Elks Babe Ruth League will begin today at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.
Two games will take place today in the double-elimination tournament with Broughton’s Sports and Davis Trust Company getting things started with a 5:30 p.m. tilt. Allegheny Insurance and Elkins Fordland will play today’s second contest at 8 p.m.
The winner of the Broughton’s Sports/Davis Trust game will face Citizens Bank of West Virginia in the first contest at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Allegheny/Fordland winner will then play the second game against McDonald’s at 8 p.m. There will be two games again on Wednesday and Thursday and one single matchup on Friday. The tournament will conclude with Saturday’s championship game scheduled for noon.
McDonald’s won the regular-season league title this year with Citizens Bank of West Virginia finishing runner-up. Davis Trust captured third place, while Fordland was fourth, Allegheny fifth and Broughton’s sixth.
“Two or three (different) teams can win this tournament,” Elkins Elks Babe Ruth President Brad Schumacher said.
“Staying in the winner’s bracket is the key in saving pitching for the week-long tourney.
“I would like to thank all our volunteers with the league, especially Jim Satterfield and Dennis Wymer, who did so much field maintenance and prepared the field before games.”
At the conclusion of the City Tournament, teams will start gearing up for state tournament competition.
The Babe Ruth State Tournament for the 15 year-old age group will get underway on July 5 as Elkins plays host to the tourney.
The 13 year-olds will travel to Beckley on July 12, while the 14 year-olds will host their tournament and begin play the same day.
