Moorefield repeats as state champs

St. Albans captures Class AAA crown; Bridgeport wins sixth straight double-A title

CHARLESTON -- Moorefield claimed a 4-2 win over Charleston Catholic in the Class A championship game Sunday at Appalachian Power Park.

It was the second straight title and fourth overall for the Yellow Jackets, who plated two runs in the fourth inning to break a 2-2 deadlock.

Grant Keller reached on a passed ball on a third strike with one out to start the fourth-inning rally for Moorefield.

Jayden Moore then doubled to set the stage for Thomas Williams, who singled to center to plate Keller with what turned out to be the winning run.

A throwing error by the Irish allowed Moore to trot home to make it 4-2.

Blake Watts worked four scoreless frames to earn the win, allowing four hits and fanning four. Derek Hoyt started on the mound for Moorefield.

Charleston Catholic took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Will Strickland's RBI single.

The Yellow Jackets answered in the bottom of the frame when Watts singled to plate Brent Moran.

Marshall Pile's RBI single in the second again gave the Irish the lead before Williams tallied a run-producing single to even the score at 2-2 after two innings.

Thomas Blaydes took the loss for Charleston Catholic, giving up four runs on eight hits in six innings of work. He struck out five.

The Yellow Jackets end the season with a 27-11 mark and were the top seed in the tournament.

Class AAA championship

St. Albans 5, Hurricane 0

Ayden Hodges allowed just one hit over 6 2/3 innings as St. Albans knocked off defending state champion Hurricane, 5-0, in Sunday's Class AAA title game.

It was the second title in three years for the Red Dragons (34-4). The Redskins ended the season with a 33-6 mark.

Hodges struck out seven and issued five walks in the contest.

He got all the run support he would need in the bottom of the third when Jake Carr tallied an RBI triple and later scored on a groundout by Connor Fizer.

Fizer added an RBI single in the fifth and St. Albans tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Ridge Lester and Travis Atkins' bunt single.

Joel Gardner was tagged with the loss for Hurricane, giving up three runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings. He fanned seven and walked three.

Bridgeport 5, Frankfort 2

Bridgeport captured its sixth straight Class AA banner with a 5-2 victory over Frankfort on Saturday night.

The Indians (31-7) plated a pair of runs in the first as Ethan Perry hit an RBI sacrifice fly and Drew Harbert an run-producing single.

Austin Sponaugle added an RBI single in the fourth to make it 3-0, and J.D. Love drove in another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly.

The Falcons cut the lead in half in the sixth when White plated a run on a sacrifice fly and Ben Nestor cracked an RBI single.

Perry drove in Vincenzo Cava in the sixth to push the Indians' lead to 5-2 and set the final score.

Nick Stalnaker worked into the fifth to earn the win, allowing two runs on five hits.

Zack Whitacre took the loss for Frankfort, giving up five runs in 5 1/3 innings of work. He fanned four and walked three.
