Post 29 trips Bridgeport
Smith’s four-hitter helps Elkins claim a 9-1 win over Post 68
ELKINS — Brett Smith twirled a complete-game four-hitter to help lead Elkins to a 9-1 victory over Bridgeport Tuesday night in American Legion Baseball action at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.
Smith, who improved to 2-1 on the season, surrendered just one run, struck out nine and walked two in earning the win.
“That was Brett’s best outing of the year,” Elkins general manager Chris George said. “He got ahead with his fastball then used his slider very effectively as his out pitch. It was great to see him pitch so well and I thought our defense played great behind him.”
After Post 68 (9-6) scored its lone run of the contest in the top of the first inning, Post 29 got all the runs it would need in the home half of the frame. Smith helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly to plate Will Knight, who had singled earlier in the inning, for the first run, while Read Schumacher singled and scored on a double-steal to give Elkins a 2-1 lead.
Post 29 put the contest away with a six-run fifth inning that made it 8-1.
Smith and Dustyn Primavero had run-producing hits in the inning, while Remington Stanley drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Gage Bibey drew a bases-loaded walk in the frame to also earn an RBI.
Elkins (15-13) ended the scoring in the sixth inning when Matthew Gainer slugged a solo home run on pavilion roof in right field.
Bibey and Primavero both finished with two hits and one RBI each to lead Post 29’s offensive attack. Smith knocked in a pair of runs on one hit.
Nate Mullens suffered the loss for Bridgeport in four innings pitched. He allowed four hits, struck out three and walked none. Trey Pancake had one hit and one RBIs to lead Post 68 at the plate.
Elkins will entertain Weston for an Area 5 matchup at 6:30 p.m. today at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.
