More first-time winners at Raceway

KERENS -- More new faces graced victory lane at Elkins Raceway last Saturday night.

In the second added race, two Mini Wedge graduates won their first "big" car features.

In the Jenkins Ford Super Late Models, Shane Hitt tripped the clock the quickest with a lap of 14.415 seconds. Michael Lake and Logan Hitt scored prelims. At the outset, D Jay Miller grabbed the point with Shane Hitt, Logan Hitt, Lake and Clate Copeman in tow. But the yellow quickly came out.

On the restart, Miller and Shane Hitt made contact, sending Hitt around in turn two. Shane Hitt was given his spot back, as Miller was sent to the tail. That put Shane Hitt and Logan Hitt on the front row. Logan Hitt outdragged his father for the front spot as the duo put on a show at the front. The laps clicked off and with four to go, Ace Howdershelt and Nick Tressler collected each other in turn one and Logan Hitt had nowhere to go and slammed nose first into the pile.

Luckily it was only cosmetic damage as the 2012-13 Mini Wedge and 2014-15 Mod Lite Champion won his first career Super Late Model feature. Shane Hitt was second, Lake, Billy Eash and Miller rounded out the top five.

On the fourth try at green, the Budweiser Fastrak late Models counted a lap. Skip Hare led early only to have Luke Hyre take over on the ninth go round.

The 2019 track Champion Derrick Shaw would apply pressure but the 2016 Mini Wedge Champ didn't falter and collected his first career checkerboard.

Shaw crossed in second, Troy Frazier was third, Trey Watson and Hayden Jacobs were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Robin Lashley grabbed the point at the green in the UMP Modifieds, but had mechanical problems on lap six, handing the spot to Kevin Rooks.

Rooks, the wrench turner for Evans racing, hadn't been behind the wheel for four years, and was a last- minute addition to the field. Rooks held off a determined Presley Wilt in her best run of the year for his first Elkins victory. Kenny Rowback, Anthony Arbogast and Matthew Chenoweth filled out the top five.

In an action-filled Holbrook on the Hill Street Stock finale, Randy Bohan was on the point at the outset, but James Swenskie took over on circuit nine. Bohan kept the heat on Swenskie when on lap 14, something happened in the steering of Swenskie's ride, as the car quickly turned right and went airborne over turn two. Luckily Swenskie was alright. That handed the lead back to Bohan, who would sit in victory circle for the first time since the end of the 2012 season.

Chris McDonald, Josh Sigler, Swenskie and Brian Youtzy were the top five.

There was a scary moment in the Edge Hot Mods as cars bunched up on the front straight and Thomas Sigler barrel rolled. Luckily, Sigler was unhurt, and the Sigler Fabrication car did its job.

Apparent winner Tyler Parrish was disqualified in a post-race inspection, giving Michael Moreland his second checker of the year. Jeff Gorrell, Daniel Helmick, Todd Simmons and Chris Gibson completed the top five.

The Mini Mods returned after two weeks off as Brad Currence kept his undefeated streak in the Junior Class alive adding his 12th first-place trophy to the mantle. Kristopher Wyatt, Kolby Sullivan, Cole Tasker and Declan Carpenter was the finishing order. In the Senior Class, Blake Runyon held off Noah Whited for his first win of the year. Gunner Binns, Alexis Cooper, Brett Howell and Jakob Barrett completed the finish.

Saturday Night Thunder plus three returns this Saturday as gates open at 5 p.m. Also mark your calendars for the annual Festival race on Oct.1 5. Keep checking the Elkins Raceway facebook page for details.
