ELKINS -- The Elkins High School golf team closed out the regular season with a Big 10 Conference match against Fairmont Senior Tuesday at the Elks Country Club Golf Course.
The Polar Bears won the match with a score of 159 as senior Clark Craig led the way for the visitors with a 5-under low-medalist score of 31, something Elkins coach Dave Baird doesn't recall ever seeing at the Elks.
"The 31 (Craig) shot is probably the lowest high school score I've seen at the Elks since I started coaching here 15 years ago," Baird said.
"I can't remember a score any lower, that's for sure. He's definitely one of the top two golfers in the state."
Craig's teammate, Gannon Satterfield, also had a strong showing for Fairmont Senior by hitting a 37 for the day.
Elkins shot a 206 and was led by Ivan Looney-Sanders' score of 47. Tanner Miller followed with a 49, while senior Gabby Bedford shot a 52. Harmon Young hit a 58 for the hosts and Chase Bedford finished with a 60.
"We had a couple players shoot to their potential, and our scores were down where they needed to be," Baird said. "It was nice to see Gabby play one of her best matches of the season in her last one at home."
The Tigers will compete in the Big 10 Championships Monday at Stonewall Resort.
"Hopefully, we can come out and have another solid showing at the Big 10 championships next week," Baird said. "The course there is one of the toughest ones around for high school golfers, so we'll have to wait and see how it turns out."
