Firefighters battle Elkins house blaze

ELKINS -- Residents living in an apartment complex on Henry Avenue were able to escape without injuries when a fire broke loose at the two-story building Sunday night.
At approximately 8:16 p.m., firefighters from the Elkins Fire Department were the first to respond to the fire at the three-apartment structure, located next to Central Towers and the Jennings Randolph Federal Building.
"When we arrived there was a fire on the second floor and in the attic," said Elkins Fire Department Chief Steve Himes. "At this point we're not sure how it started. We are still investigating what happened and assessing how much damage there was."
The Beverly Fire Department and Coalton Fire Department assisted the Elkins Fire Department at the scene as firefighters battled the blaze until approximately 11 p.m. The Belington Fire Department covered the station for the EFD.
"Two of the apartments in the building didn't have any fire per se, but they still probably have quite a bit of water damage that came down from the attic and upstairs," said Himes.
"It was hot and muggy to begin with, so we had to get some help because guys were tiring out pretty quick. We got a pretty good handle on it around 10 o'clock. There were just a few places in the attic that were hard to get to."
The Elkins City Police, Randolph County Sheriff's Department and Randolph County Emergency Squad also assisted at the fire.
