Teacher Spotlight: Kelly Teter

By Johnetta Thornhill 2 min read

Kelly Teter is one of the newest teachers at Elkins High School, residing in classroom 101. She is primarily an English teacher. Teter, however, didn't always have plans to work in the education system.

"I didn't originally go to college to be a teacher, so whenever I went to school I actually went into sports medicine and physical therapy, but I'd always had a love for reading." Teter said.

She went to Fairmont State, where a friend recommended the education course there and Teter fell in love with it, leading her to become an English teacher. She had picked up other courses because of her newfound passion.

"I picked up a political science course that had to do with some reading and some literature and things in college that first year." Teter said, "and I found that I had had more of an interest in English and the lit side of it, [so I] decided I wanted to be an English major."

She was an elementary school teacher for over half of her career; however, she never actually had a preferred grade level to teach. Teter had an opening for the secondary school she was at, that allowed her to get her high school certification.

"I'm just really looking forward to getting to know the students better, this year being my first year here at this school." Mrs. Teter said "So just trying to see all of their interests and go to some of the games and some of the events here at the school and see what everyone's into."
