Trumps attitude toward the Republican Party

A.J. Liebling, an outstanding journalist who worked for the New Yorker, visited Louisiana Governor Earl Long in the 1950s. When he became familiar with Earl, he was struck by the contrast between him and his famous brother Huey. Liebling related a story that sharpened the contrast. The story involved the "Kingfish" Huey Long asking a supporter for a drink. Obligingly, his friend brought up a bottle which Huey refused to share. Harnett Kane, a Louisiana journalist, pointed out that "Earl would have given him a drink out of the bottle." This explanation could also account for Donald ...

He and his family and friends were and are sad and devastated. There are times Barry is, of course, overwhelmed with what is taking place. Yet his focus now is on raising funding for ALS. He comments that while ALS will not be cured in his lifetime, he is ...

Things will look a little different for middle school in Barbour County next year, but sometimes change needs to take place. Even though school is out, there are plenty of Vacation Bible Schools around the area to take part in. Camp Popeye will be hosting VBS from June 8 - 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. ...

‘Common good’ not a priority

Arthur Larson, an adviser to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, penned a book entitled 'What We Are For' in 1959. The gist of the work focused on what came to be known as “modern Republicanism.” Larson's work amounted to a plea for a party willing to compromise rather than destroy all that the New Deal had created. Right-wing Republicans desired to rollback Social Security and other government programs. Eisenhower admired Larson and criticized Republican Ultra-Conservatives. As he expressed to his brother Edgar, if the GOP tried to liquidate New Deal programs, “You would not hear ...
