Applause to the many volunteers who have brought us the 2024 Randolph County Fair this week at 4-H Camp Pioneer in Beverly. A full day of activities are scheduled today, with gates opening at 8 a.m. A Color Run will be at 8:30 p.m., and at 10 a.m. there will be a Homemade Craft Show, Heritage Demonstrations, and the opening of a Petting Zoo. If you’re going to talk the talk in West Virginia about valuing the lives of babies and their mothers, you’d better walk the walk. One organization is helping communities do that in a way that provides support to parents facing the impossible, and is saving lives. Safe Haven Baby Box officials work with communities to give parents a way to anonymously hand over their infant to another person. Last weekend, The Inter-Mountain was named the Newspaper of the Year during the 2024 West Virginia Press Association Convention Awards Banquet in Charleston. This is a great honor for this newspaper, but the award also honors the entire local community, for The Inter-Mountain represents, and mirrors, the residents in the community it serves. Despite the drum beat of month-after-month pleas for blood donors to help the American Red Cross meet a desperate need, the organization’s supply has actually plummeted more than 25%.
