Does the end truly justify the means?

When does the end justify the means? A question that has been asked for hundreds of years, with rarely correct answers. Do you say it’s OK to lie during an election cycle, whether you’re running for City Council or President of the United States? Do you say it’s OK to deliver a blow to your opponent’s record or to overstate your own? The line between outright lying and inflation of the truth is thin, and with so much at stake, it’s no surprise that the “end justifies the means” thinking rears its ugly head. When I was young it was easy to think that the end ...

Reader against mayor holding another office

A recent article in The Inter-Mountain spoke of Elkins City Council looking to possibly change the charter of the City to allow Mayor Jerry Marco to possibly hold another office. This concerns me and I think it should concern the people of Elkins, and of Randolph County, if the position is county related. The government of this country was designed to be about checks and balances. The City Charter or the Constitutions of the state and country saw it that no one person, position or branch of government get any more power then the other.  Imagine the mayor also holding a Randolph ...

Reader supports delegate’s views

I was encouraged to read about Elias Coop- Gonzalez efforts to return the 10 Commandments to our Schools. As I read on in the article, I am also supportive in his efforts regarding energy and manufacturing, the second Amendment and Right to Life and his stance on gender affirming surgery. He is Constitutionally focused. He is among those people who remember the intentions of our forefathers as they created this “one nation under God.” And he is the youngest member of our Legislature. He stressed “we can all make a difference.” Get involved. Learn the Constitution. “The ...

Reader opposes views of delegate

So Elias Coop-Gonzalez wants to see the Ten Commandments “put back” in every classroom. (Were they ever there in the first place?) For someone who loves to bang on (and on, and on) about his love of the Constitution, he might want to try reading it sometime. Or just start with the First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” If The Inter-Mountain is going to give front-page treatment to the uninformed ramblings of someone who sits on the Legislature’s Energy and Manufacturing Committee, it could help readers by pointing out that his ...

Local residents praised for help

A few days ago our 80-year-old husband/father, Erwin, left our eastern Pennsylvania home with the idea he would drive to Kansas City. He has been diagnosed with cognitive impairment and left before dawn without telling us. He made it across Pennsylvania then spent the rest of the day wandering around northeast Ohio. He eventually turned back east and ended up in West Virginia. His cell phone had died so we had no way to contact him. We were hopeful that he would find his way back home, but instead he became confused, lost and probably sleep deprived. Much to our surprise, 30 hours ...

How will the U.S. afford to help Israel?

With the war in Ukraine still ongoing, I wonder where we will get the money to help out our longtime allies in Israel. We did not have the roughly $200 billion we gave Ukraine. That money was borrowed from foreign banks and adds onto our national debt. If our government wants to do something that will affect the future of our children’s children, it should be brought up for a national vote. I am sick and tired of them printing money when their checkbook reaches a zero balance. Once they run out of tax dollars to spend they should have to cut programs and reorganize their ...
