I am writing to recognize the outstanding Little League All-Star program that has made this season truly special for our community's young athletes. The coaching staff deserves immense praise (Anthony Severino, Justin Arbogast, and Dalton Schneider) for their excellence. Their patient guidance, skill development, and positive approach have helped the boys grow not only as players but as confident, team oriented young men. What is patriotism? At a time when Americans are being asked how proud they feel of their country, it is worth remembering that pride and patriotism are not the same thing. A recent NBC poll asked Americans how they feel about the state of the nation as we celebrate the 250th anniversary. Fourth of July weekend was rough on Donald Trump. At Mount Rushmore, he fulminated against “Communists,” becoming again a “divider” rather than a “uniter.” Admittedly, that is his style, but the nation's birthday should rate a gentler presentation. Add to this the Great American State Fair, his arrest of an Olympic athlete for allegedly defiling the reflecting pool, which Trump’s no-bid contractor had already damaged. At last we can begin to expect good news from local public schools because we are getting new local leadership and more effective state quality assessments. This week the Charleston Gazette-Mail and The Elkins Inter-Mountain both published articles reporting changes in county leadership and in private school assessment from state government.
