ELKINS – Davis Medical Center Infection Preventionist Misti Shine, RN, CIC, recently received certification in Infection Control from the Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology Inc. This achievement demonstrates her mastery of infection prevention and control knowledge in a healthcare environment, officials said.
Infection Prevention specialists are responsible for maintaining and improving the quality of patient care by minimizing the spread of communicable diseases in the healthcare environment.
“We congratulate Misti on this important personal accomplishment and also recognize her commitment to the safety of our patients,” said Michelle Stanton, chief quality officer and risk manager for DMC.
Worldwide only about 5,000 practitioners are CIC credentialed and hold certification in Infection Control.
Shine began her career at Davis Medical Center as a registered nurse in 1999. In 2013 she was named Infection Preventionist. She holds an associate’s degree from Davis & Elkins College and will complete her bachelor of science in nursing in December.
She’s an active member of the West Virginia Association for Professionals in Infection Control and in 2016 will be an active Board member for that group.
IP professionals watch for significant trends in infection rates and investigate the causes for these trends. In some cases, the IP performs an investigation, starts control measures, distributes information and trains healthcare staff to prevent and control future infections.
CBIC certification protects the public by providing a standardized measurement of current knowledge needed for persons practicing infection control.
