Fall Colors and Ice Cream

Autumn’s annual bounty of beauty

The Inter-Mountain photos by Shannon Bennett Campbell Whit’s Frozen Custard Deli sits prominently off the Jane Lew Exit of I-79 beside the Fire Hall.

When yellow mums begin to fill porch flower boxes and distant tree-tops change their appearances from greens to oranges and reds, we know it will soon be time to jump into cars and tour the area so we will not miss autumn’s most spectacular scenes.

Almost every direction in our Central West Virginia area will have its most colorful coat on, and these tours we take are surely an annual event no one wants to miss.

This year may be a good one to swing the car through Jane Lew (Lewis County) and make a stop right beside the fire station where we can additionally enjoy a new establishment that makes its own ice cream custard. Closed only on Sunday, they begin serving from 11 a.m. and continue to 7 p.m. daily.

Known as Whit’s, in addition to great lunches with Amish meats, cheeses, soups, salads  and other side dishes from Walnut Creek, Ohio, one would want to end a deli meal with their creamy cold custard that sits on a special waffle cone and is something one would never want to finish.

Taking a cooler would not be a bad idea, because they have made provisions for travelers and have large assortments of frozen items that can extend your visit’s finds for several weeks.

Guests will find these proprietors “fast-and-friendly” and plans to return will probably be made before leaving the area.

This year, as the Mountain State Forest Festival has concluded, do continue touring our beautiful surroundings and set your course for I-79 North from the Buckhannon-Weston Interchange. Exit five miles down the road toward Jane Lew, where you will find Whit’s and your day will be a complete success.

Starting at $3.92/week.
