100 Years

Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco speaks warmly about Vallie Goots.

A crowd of Randolph County residents journeyed to Bridgeport to join Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco in saluting long-time local leader Vallie Goots, who celebrated her 100th birthday Feb. 12.

The mayor spent some moments describing Goots’ community involvement, which he noted “reflects a century of service, generosity, and commitment to Elkins and its people.”

Her active service involved two terms as President of the Womans Club of Elkins, where she was honored with state leadership awards, and her participation involved 74 years of service.

Additionally, she was active as a 29-year member of the Senior Center’s Committee on Aging, and led her Church’s St. Brendan Holy Rosary Guild, where she organized funeral luncheons for parish families for many years.

During her 33 years as a Hospital Auxiliary volunteer, she donated more than 8,200 service hours and was the group’s treasurer.

In 2019, the I.O.O.F. cited her as an Outstanding Community Volunteer.

She and her husband were long-time owners of Goots Produce in Elkins, and her legacy continues to inspire all who have had the privilege of knowing her.

Marco concluded his presentation by saying, “The City of Elkins extends its deepest gratitude and warmest congratulations as we honor Vallie Goots for her 100 years of life and extraordinary service.”

Vallie Goots and three of her children, Rosemary, James and Barbara, were proud and smiling about this big day.

Longtime friend Corina Belan shares a story with Vallie Goots’ daughter during the celebration.
