MILL CREEK — Several families took part in a variety of learning activities March 18 during the first STEAM night at Tygarts Valley Middle/High School.

From learning about the chemistry of root beer floats to floating paperclips on top of water to see surface tension, youngsters had a lot of hands-on learning stations during the event.

TVM/HS science teacher Lucy Godwin said she was glad students and local families were able to attend the evening, and she hopes to make it an annual event.

“We planned our STEAM night to engage families in hands-on activities that encourage problem solving, critical thinking and creativity,” Godwin said. “We also wanted to showcase the incredible work our students have created in our newly installed Makerspace.”

Stations included representatives from Davis & Elkins College, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, West Virginia University Extension, Artsbank, Randolph County Schools, TVM/HS teachers and other volunteers.

Starting at $3.92/week.
