Carol and Barry Band
Carol and Barry Band lived one hour away from each other in New Jersey. They both came to Davis & Elkins College where they met for the first time at a get acquainted dance at the college. They went together for four years, graduated in June and were married in August.
They were married by the Rev. Dr. Norwood Band, Mr. Band’s dad, at Mrs. Band’s home church in Lawrenceville, New Jersey on Aug. 15, 1970. Following a honeymoon in New England, they came back to Elkins to start teaching. It was the people and the mountains that kept them in West Virginia.
Mrs. Band taught until their oldest son, Barry Jr., was born. She did substitute teaching after the children were “well on their way” to a productive life.
Mr. Band spent 40 years in education with 32 years as the principal of Third Ward Elementary. He retired as a National Distinguished Principal.
They have been involved in various activities at First United Methodist Church in Elkins throughout their married life. Both taught Sunday school for 20 years. They also have worked with children and youth at church, school and scouting during their 50 years of marriage.
Following retirement, they have spent time with all four families and 13 grandchildren. They have also spent January-March enjoying the warm weather in Bradenton, Florida, and all it has to offer.
No reception is planned because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Cards may be sent to: 123 Sunset Drive, Elkins, WV 26241.
